Newly-crowned largest cave chamberComing up with precise estimates for the area and volume of cave chambers is tricky business. Huge cave chambers will connect to tunnels at the edges, so where does the dividing line sit for the start of a chamber? Much of a cave chamber may be under water, how can that be measured? And finally, how do you measure the area of a complicated 3-D structure?A group of scientists from institutions and cave societies in Britain and China, often with support from the National Geographic Society, have been attempting to do those measurements using laser-based scanning and various standards for when cave chambers begin and end. This photo comes from the Miao Room, the largest chamber in the Gebihe Cave System in southern China. The light in this shot comes from the photographer’s camera and illuminates the green-colored river that has carved the chamber. Based on newly published measurements, the experts now say that this is likely the largest single cave chamber yet discovered. The previous champion was the Sarawak chamber in Malaysia. That chamber still takes the title of “most surface area”, but the new volume estimate for this chamber, 10.78 million cubic meters, is about 10% larger than the estimated volume for the Sarawak chamber.-JBBImage credit: National Geographichttp://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/09/140927-largest-cave-china-exploration-science/http://www.nationalgeographic.com/china-caves/
